I have worked in two U.S. nuclear weapons laboratories, and in 1991 I became a whistleblower at the Livermore lab. Depleted uranium is very, very, very nasty stuff:

Depleted uranium (DU) weaponry meets the definition of weapon of mass destruction in two out of three categories under U.S. Federal Code Title 50 Chapter 40 Section 2302.

DU weaponry violates all international treaties and agreements, Hague and Geneva war conventions, the 1925 Geneva gas protocol, U.S. laws and U.S. military law.

Since 1991, the U.S. has released the radioactive atomicity equivalent of at least 400,000 Nagasaki bombs into the global atmosphere. That is 10 times the amount released during atmospheric testing which was the equivalent of 40,000 Hiroshima bombs. The U.S. has permanently contaminated the global atmosphere with radioactive pollution having a half-life of 2.5 billion years.

The U.S. has illegally conducted four nuclear wars in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and twice in Iraq since 1991, calling DU “conventional” weapons when in fact they are nuclear weapons.
DU on the battlefield has three effects on living systems: it is a heavy metal “chemical” poison, a “radioactive” poison and has a “particulate” effect due to the very tiny size of the particles that are 0.1 microns and smaller.
The blueprint for DU weaponry is a 1943 Manhattan Project memo to Gen. L. Groves that recommended development of radioactive materials as poison gas weapons – dirty bombs, dirty missiles and dirty bullets.

DU weapons are very effective kinetic energy penetrators, but even more effective bioweapons since uranium has a strong chemical affinity for phosphate structures concentrated in DNA.

DU is the Trojan Horse of nuclear war – it keeps giving and keeps killing. There is no way to clean it up, and no way to turn it off because it continues to decay into other radioactive isotopes in over 20 steps.

Terry Jemison at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs stated in August 2004 that over 518,000 Gulf-era veterans (14-year period) are now on medical disability, and that 7,039 were wounded on the battlefield in that same period. Over 500,000 U.S. veterans are homeless.

In some studies of soldiers who had normal babies before the war, 67 percent of the post-war babies are born with severe birth defects – missing brains, eyes, organs, legs and arms, and blood diseases.

In southern Iraq, scientists are reporting five times higher levels of gamma radiation in the air, which increases the radioactive body burden daily of inhabitants. In fact, Iraq, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan are uninhabitable.

Cancer starts with one alpha particle under the right conditions. One gram of DU is the size of a period in this sentence and releases 12,000 alpha particles per second.

This is clipped from the 1982 Defense Department film, NUWAX-81 Documentary Nuclear Weapon Accident Exercise. This clip shows the spraying of short-lived radioisotopes via an agricultural sprayer to a localized area to simulate contamination by weapons-grade plutonium.
The Nuclear Weapons Accident Exercise (NUWAX-81) was conducted in April 1981 jointly by the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Energy (DOE) at the DOE’s Nevada test site and included FEMA and the State of California. The six day exercise scenario involved a simulated crash of an U.S. Army helicopter transporting nuclear weapons to a storage site. Aircraft parts and pieces of inert nuclear training weapons were prepositioned at the site. Short-lived radioisotopes, radium-223 and mercury-197, were distributed via an agricultural sprayer to a localized area to simulate contamination by weapons-grade plutonium. More than 600 accident response personnel participated in the exercise. The major objectives were to exercise and evaluate the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s interface with DOD, the command and control of the joint DOD-DOE response forces, and the coordination of their technical and logistical support. The exercise aroused greater awareness within federal and state governments of the need to plan and coordinate response procedures and to practice these procedures and was followed up by additional exercises. France is one of the five “Nuclear Weapons States” under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty but is not known to possess or develop any chemical or biological weapons.[1][2] France was the fourth country to test an independently developed nuclear weapon in 1960, under the government of Charles de Gaulle. The French military is currently thought to retain a weapons stockpile of around 350 operational nuclear warheads, making it the third-largest in the world.[3] The weapons are part of the national Force de frappe, developed in the late 1950s and 1960s to give France the ability to distance itself from NATO while having a means of nuclear deterrence under sovereign control.

France has never ratified the Partial Test Ban Treaty, giving it the capability to conduct nuclear tests. However, it has signed the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. On 28 January 1996 then-President Jacques Chirac said the French military would not conduct any more nuclear tests. France denies currently having chemical weapons, ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in 1995, and acceded to the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BWC) in 1984. France had also ratified the Geneva Protocol in 1926.

Nuclear Testing Footage: Operation Crossroads – Part 3 (1946)

In Baker on July 25, the weapon was suspended beneath landing craft LSM-60 anchored in the midst of the target fleet. Baker was detonated 90 feet (27 m) underwater, halfway to the bottom in water 180 feet (54 m) deep. How/Mike Hour was at 0835. No identifiable part of LSM-60 was ever found; it was presumably vaporized by the nuclear fireball. Ten ships were sunk, including the German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, which sank in December, five months after the test, because radioactivity prevented repairs to a leak in the hull.

Photographs of Baker are unique among nuclear detonation pictures. The blinding flash that usually obscures the target area took place underwater and was barely seen. The clear image of ships in the foreground and background gives a sense of scale. The large Wilson cloud and the vertical water column are distinctive Baker shot features, making the pictures easily identifiable. The most notable picture shows a mark where the 27,000 ton battleship Arkansas was.

As with Able, any ships that remained afloat within 1,000 yards of the detonation were seriously damaged, but this time the damage came from below, from water pressure rather than air pressure. The greatest difference between the two shots, however, was the radioactive contamination of all the target ships by Baker. Regardless of the degree of damage, only nine surviving Baker target ships were eventually decontaminated and sold for scrap. The rest were sunk at sea after decontamination efforts failed.

The 167 Bikini residents were moved to the uninhabited Rongerik Atoll prior to Crossroads, but were unable to feed themselves in the new environment. Visitors to Rongerik reported the islanders were facing potential starvation by January 1947, suffering malnutrition by July, and emaciated by January 1948. In March 1948 they were evacuated to Kwajalein Atoll, and then settled onto another uninhabited island, Kili, in November. With only one third of a square mile, Kili has one tenth the land area of Bikini and, more importantly, has no lagoon and no protected harbor. Unable to practice their native culture of lagoon fishing, they have been dependent on food shipments ever since. Their four thousand descendents today are living on several islands and in foreign countries.

Their desire to return to Bikini was thwarted indefinitely by the U.S. decision to resume nuclear testing at Bikini in 1954. During the spring and summer months of 1954, 1956, and 1958, twenty-one more nuclear bombs were detonated at Bikini, yielding a total of 75 megatons, equivalent to more than three thousand Baker bombs. Only one was a “self cleansing” air burst, the 3.8 megaton Redwing Cherokee test. The rest were surface bursts producing massive local fallout. The first after Crossroads was the dirtiest: the 15 megaton Bravo shot of Operation Castle on March 1, 1954, the largest ever U.S. test. Fallout from Bravo caused radiation injury to Bikini islanders who were living on Rongelap Atoll at the time.

The brief attempt to resettle Bikini from 1974 until 1978 was aborted when health problems from radioactivity in the food supply caused the atoll to be evacuated again. Sport divers who visit Bikini to dive on the shipwrecks must eat imported food. The lagoon is teeming with fish, but none of it is safe to eat.

Following test Baker decontamination problems, the United States Navy equipped newly constructed ships with a CounterMeasure WashDown System (CMWDS) of piping and nozzles to cover exterior surfaces of the ship with a spray of salt water from the firefighting system when nuclear attack appeared imminent. The film of flowing water would theoretically prevent contaminants from settling into cracks and crevices.

The name “Bikini” was adopted for bikini swimwear during Operation Crossroads; a coincidence of explosive shock perhaps (”like the bomb, the bikini is small and devastating”), and the realization that “atom bombs reduce everybody to primitive costume.”

The 1976 Bruce Conner film Crossroads utilizes research footage coupled with a Terry Riley soundtrack.

The 1988 film Radio Bikini was nominated for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. Directed by Robert Stone, it recounts the story of Operation Crossroads, concentrating on how it affected the Bikini islanders (they were deported en masse to Rongerik Atoll) and the servicemen who took part in the operation. The film almost exclusively uses archival footage, much of it in color. Video of the Crossroads Baker explosion is among the most often shown videos of a nuclear explosion, and exists in many sources.

Created by the Office of Civil Defense in 1967, Personnel Monitoring is the first segments of a two part film which deals with fallout monitoring in public shelters and large open areas of municipal importance. Demonstrating the proper procedure for examining radiation levels of people entering fallout shelters, the film was designed to be viewed by radiological defense trainees and shelter managers under the supervision of defense officials.

Decontamination of Ships after an Atomic Test Bikini Atoll 1946

This clip shows efforts after the BAKER test to decontaminate navy ships. Operation Crossroads was an atmospheric nuclear weapon test series conducted in the summer of 1946. The series consisted of two detonations, each with a yield of 23 kilotons: ABLE detonated at an altitude of 520 feet (158 meters) on 1 July and BAKER detonated 90 feet (27 meters) underwater on 25 July. This clip is from after the BAKER test. The detonation of BAKER caused most of the target fleet to be bathed in radioactive water spray and radioactive debris from the lagoon bottom. . The test produced a radioactive mist that deposited active products on the target fleet in amounts far greater than had been predicted. As the Joint Chiefs of Staff evaluation board later noted, the contaminated ships “became radioactive stoves, and would have burned all living things aboard them with invisible and painless but deadly radiation.” With the exception of 12 target vessels anchored in the array and the landing craft beached on Bikini Island, the target fleet remained too radiologically contaminated for several weeks for more than brief on-board activities. The inability to complete inspections on much of the target fleet threatened the success of the operation after BAKER . A program of target vessel decontamination was begun in earnest about 1 August. This involved washing the ships’ exteriors using work crews drawn from the target ships’ companies under radiological supervision of monitors equipped with radiation detection and measurement devices. Initially, decontamination was slow as the safe time aboard the target ships was measured only in minutes. As time progressed, the support fleet itself had become contaminated by the low-level radioactivity in marine growth on the ships’ hulls and seawater piping systems. By 10 August, a decision was made to stop work in Bikini and tow the surviving target fleet to Kwajalein Atoll where the work could be done in uncontaminated water. The move was accomplished during the remainder of August and September. A major task at Kwajalein was to offload ammunition stored aboard the target ships. this work continued into the fall of 1946. Personnel continued to work on target ships at Kwajalein into 1947. Eight of the major ships and two submarines were towed back to the United States and Hawaii for radiological inspection. Twelve target ships were so lightly contaminated that they were remanned and sailed back to the United States by their crews. The remaining target ships were destroyed by sinking off Bikini Atoll, off Kwajalein Atoll, or near the Hawaiian Islands during 1946-1948. The support ships were decontaminated as necessary and received a radiological clearance before they could return to the fleet. This decontamination and clearance process required a great deal of experimentation and learning at Navy shipyards in the United States, primarily at San Francisco. All CROSSROADS operations were undertaken under radiological supervision intended to keep personnel from being exposed to more than 0.1 roentgen (R) per day. At the time, this was considered to be an amount of radiation that could be tolerated for long periods without any harmful effects on health. A.N.P. T31/T.C.38 Variations Gas Mask Collection Update

Very Early Polish OM-14 Gas Mask Collection Update

This mask is a very early 1950s OM-14 from Poland. This mask is very similar to the WW2 Russian SM-1. Mask is badly discolored and wrinkled. Comes complete with large filter, black rubber hose with rotary fittings, and a carrying bag. I believe the filter to be from a later date than the mask though. An interesting and very difficult to find mask.
